Marina Bay

After coming back to Singapore, I found that a lot has changed. There is a new circle line, the hawker centre near my house has been demolished, there are two casinoes, and according to Samuel the Marina Bay skyline can now beat Hong Kong’s. So with Chee Kern and Julius, we ventured to see it for ourselves.

Beautiful waterfront.

Impressive skyline.

Inside the Marina Bay Sands.

To the casino. We didn’t go in cos the minimum age is 21 and Singaporeans/PRs have to pay $100.

The iconic 3 buildings.

Helix bridge linking to promenade. This is modelled over the double-helix DNA strands, and at intervals there are lights on the ground with the letters A, T, C and G, standing for the components of DNA. A little tacky though.

Singapore High Commissioner’s Student Welcome Reception

Quite a mouthful, but every year the High Commissioner hosts a reception in the major Australian cities for Singapore students. I guess its to persuade them to stay connected, go back to Singapore, etc. This year it’s held at Crown Plaza and there’s free flow of drinks (including wine) and a buffet dinner. Not bad.

View from the top of Crown Plaza. Adelaide has so few tall buildings that this is a relatively rare sight.

Group picture.

AFL: Port Adelaide v Carlton

Australia has its own brand of football: Aussie rules. It would be a pity to leave Australia without seeing an AFL match, so when Chee Kern said he had a spare ticket, I jumped at the chance. Chee Kern, his brother, Jia yong and I went to the AAMI stadium to watch the match. Port Adelaide is the home team, while Carlton is from Melbourne.

Outside the stadium.

They had a free reception lunch for international students. When we reached, it was almost over; we just had time to grab a few bbq hotdogs and drinks. As we were leaving the hangar for the stadium, they gave out Port Adelaide memorabilia such as the football, programme guide, waterbottle, etc.

At the entrance of the stadium.

At the spectator’s stand.

Unfurling the flag at half-time.

Close up view of the match.
