From Korea

Have a look at what my sister brought back from Korea. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

KFC’s Surf & Turf

KFC’s Surf & Turf looked pretty good on the advertisement:

In the interest of, er-hem, investigative journalism :P , I ordered a set:

This picture departs from the set meal, in that I changed the mashed potato to french fries and the pepsi to hot tea.

The fish sticks just tastes like normal fish fingers. Considering that it costs the same as a 2 piece chicken meal, I think I’ll have that in the future.

P.S You can see how small the cup of tea is.

Dream a Little Dream…

Freud would call dreams a window into the unconscious id – the id wishes to express a certain base idea, while the superego, the culmination of a society’s morals and mores cannot allow it. The result would be a dream: a base wish disguised as something more palatable to the morals of the times.

I’ve never been very religious, nor have I frequently had dreams with overtly religious themes, but yesterday I dreamt that I was the Pope! And the setting of the dream: the pope’s guest toilet.

I was the Roman-Catholic Pope, and I was in Greece to attend a meeting of the Catholic leaders. There were other leaders at the conclave too, the Patriarchs of Constantinople, of Jerusalem, of Alexandria, of Antioch, etc. I was there as a “First Among Equals” by virtue of my post, but I didn’t have any more influence than any other member. I remember thinking that the bathroom was more opulent than my own back in Vatican City. There were lots of expensive, travel-sized cosmetics, creams and lotions on a little shelf above the sink. The tap was a very expensive tap, but not of gold. It didn’t shine the way it would have if there were diamonds encrusted, but one can sense the immense innate worth of it. There were three of the items that I remembered very clearly: there was a beer-flavoured toothpaste, which I used (sweet but beer like), and a paper bag of two slices of toast in a microwavable bag, and a paper bag of Twisties, similarly in a microwavable bag! There was a knock at the door, I was trying to grab all the goodies and shove them in my bag, when I woke up.

Now I’ve always believed in the Chinese idiom, 日有所思,也有所梦, that one dreams about what one thinks about during the day. Dream interpretation is always vague without intimate knowledge of the subject, but I should have the requisite knowledge of myself. I hope.

The Pope’s influence was tremendous a few centuries ago; now, though, with the division of state and church in the US, as well as the rise of Islam, the Pope’s voice is no longer that powerful in global affairs. I think this describes me: I was quite smart and hardworking when young, but I’ve grown lazier and slacker – a regression of a glorious past.

The wide array of tempting objects on the bathroom ledge probably stems from the buffet discussion I was having with Gerald. I was thinking about the wide selection of food available, but how did they morth into cosmetics and creams? That I’m not sure. As for the grabbing of stuff near the end of my dream, I think that’s from the last calls at buffets, when the restaurant is closing: I’ll do a last minute grab of all the good stuff and slowly enjoy them. :P

The beer is probably because I was thinking about my Moscato, a light coloured Italian wine, before sleeping. I was wondering when to drink it. The toothpaste came about because of the spate of China food scares, especially the ethylene glycol in toothpaste. I suffer from migraine, and even a moderate amount of alcohol can trigger it. Therefore, I think that the dream is a warning: drink the moscato (which incidentally is the sweetest wine I’ve tasted), and I may end up in pain, similar to those who’ve used the sweet toothpaste tainted with ethylene glycol.

The tap was probably because Today had some article about the Pope’s bathroom having a diamond encrusted tap. I was also reading an article about expensive mobile phones being expensive solely because they were made of gold or had gems encrusted on them. I remember thinking that if I want to buy something expensive, it must be expensive because of its functional value, and not because it is plastered with gems. An ordinary looking but valuable object, such as this tap, would quite appeal to me.

The slices of micrwavable toast are very similar to those found in NUS library’s. I believe that is because school is starting very soon, and I was thinking about NUS, hence the toast. Ironic that the thing I associate most with NUS, at least subconsciously, is its toast in the library! As for the Twisties, I’m really not sure. I hate Twisties; it is about the last snack I’ll eat, simply because I do not like its texture. Maybe it is a clue that I may end up hating some of the modules I bidded for?

Hmm, with dreams like these, who needs their Magic 8 Balls?
